          At this very moment, electricity is zapping through your brain, voracious killers are coursing through your veins, and corrosive chemicals sizzle in bubbles from your head to your toes. In fact, your entire body is like an electrical company, chemical factory, transportation grid, communications network, detoxification facility, hospital, and battlefield all rolled into one. The workers in each of these industries are your cells. Cells are the smallest form of life—the functional and structural units of all living things. Your body contains trillions of cells, organized into more than 200 major types. At any given time, each cell is doing thousands of jobs. Some of these tasks are so essential for life that they are carried out by virtually all cells. Others are done only by cells that are highly skilled for the work, whether it is covering up your insides (skin cells), preventing you from sloshing around like a pile of goo (bone cells), purging your body of toxic chemicals (liver cells), or enabling you to learn and remember (brain cells). Cells also must make the products your body needs, such as sweat, saliva, enzymes, hormones, and antibodies. In Chapter 1, "An Owner's Guide to the Cell," we'll explore some of the basic structures that allow cells to accomplish their tasks and some of the ways scientists study cells. In Chapter 2, "Cells 101: Business Basics," we'll focus on the functions shared by virtually all cells: making fuel and proteins, transporting materials, and disposing of wastes. In Chapter 3, "On the Job: Cellular Specialties," we'll learn how cells specialize to get their unique jobs done. In Chapters 4, "Cellular Reproduction: Multiplication by Division," and 5, "The Last Chapter: Cell Aging and Death," we'll find out how cells reproduce, age, and die. Much of the research described in this booklet is carried out by cell biologists at universities and other institutions across the nation who are supported by U.S. tax dollars, specifically those distributed by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) a component of the National Institutes of Health. NIGMS is keenly interested in cell biology because knowledge of the inner workings of cells underpins our understanding of health and disease. Although scientists daily learn more about cells and their roles in our bodies, the field is still an exciting frontier of uncharted territory and unanswered questions. Trial dial up systems such as AOL and CompuServe launch. Charging is introduced for domain names. Search technology companies such as Alta Vista, Infoseek, Excite and Metacrawler rapidly appear. 1996 Yahoo! is launched on the stock exchange and shares are up nearly 300% on first day. There is no doubt about it – the Internet has changed the world we live in. Never before has it been so easy to access information, communicate with people all over the globe and share articles, videos, photos and all manner of media. The Internet has led to an increasingly connected environment, and the growth of Internet usage has resulted in declining distribution of traditional media: television, radio, newspapers and magazines. Marketing in this connected environment and using that connectivity to market is eMarketing. eMarketing embraces a wide range of strategies, but what underpins successful eMarketing is a user-centric and cohesive approach to these strategies. While the Internet and the World Wide Web have enabled what we call New Media, the theories that lead to the development of the Internet were being developed from the 1950s.

It is designed for a relatively sophisticated undergraduate who has not taken a basic university course in economics. It also contains the standard intermediate microeconomics material and some material that ought to be standard but is not. The book can easily serve as an intermediate microeconomics text. The focus of this book is on the conceptual tools and not on fluff. Most microeconomics texts are mostly fluff and the fluff market is exceedingly over-served by $100+ texts. In contrast, this book reflects the approach actually adopted by the majority of economists for understanding economic activity. Then we set out on our path and immediately find ourselves hacking through some pretty thick jungle: even simple interactions between just two people (Part II) can be very complicated! As we add even more people (in studying auctions, for example), things get even more complicated, and the jungle gets even thicker. Then a miracle occurs: we add even more people, and a complex situation suddenly becomes simple. After hacking through thick jungle, we find ourselves in a beautiful clearing: competitive markets (Part III) are remarkably easy to analyze and understand.

  • The influence of cause-related marketing on consumer choice: Does one good turn deserve another?

          Are consumers more likely to select brands offered by companies that engage in cause-related marketing (CRM)? Somewhat surprisingly, little evidence exists that directly addresses this issue. Accordingly, the present examination investigates whether and when CRM efforts influence consumer choice. The results from several studies indicate that information regarding a company’s support of social causes can affect choice. However, CRM’s influence on choice is found to depend on the perceived motivation underlying the company’s CRM efforts as well as whether consumers must trade off company sponsorship of causes for lower performance or higher price. The results also indicate that CRM cues affect choice primarily through compensatory strategies involving trade-offs rather than through noncompensatory strategies. Implications of the current findings for existing theory are discussed along with directions for future research.

          In a world in which national boundaries are being eroded and where cultural diversity is experienced within nations as much as between them, the ability to manage and to work in multicultural teams is becoming ever more important. The Erasmus / Socrates funded IICEE project (Interpersonal and Intercultural Competence for the Enlarged Europe) has developed a module to prepare people for work and leadership in such a world. In seeking to develop intercultural competence, an approach is needed which, on the one hand, develops awareness of relevant concepts and on the other, equips learners with practical skills which enable them to manage and work in multicultural teams. Accordingly, the IICEE module is structured around three learning units: interpersonal and intercultural communication, teamwork and presentation skills; creative problem solving strategies; and crosscultural project management and team facilitation. A collaboration of partners from 12 different European countries, the IICEE project is itself a case study in cross-cultural management, and besides outlining the content of the IICEE module, this paper also describes the IICEE project experience and how it has contributed to the design of the module. The paper also reports on the experience of delivering ICBE (Intercultural Communication for the Business Environment), a Masters level module offered at Thames Valley University which is essentially the same as IICEE but without the European focus, thus allowing a more global application. Finally, the paper concludes with reference to new work that may provide a suitable framework for the many disparate elements and apparent contradictions inherent in many conceptions of intercultural competence. These include basic questions concerning intercultural competence: its goal, scope, application and theoretical underpinning.

          These are the lecture notes of a one-semester undergraduate course which we have taught several times at Binghamton University (SUNY) and San Francisco State University. For many of our students, complex analysis is their first rigorous analysis (if not mathematics) class they take, and these notes reflect this very much. We tried to rely on as few concepts from real analysis as possible. In particular, series and sequences are treated “from scratch.” This also has the (maybe disadvantageous) consequence that power series are introduced very late in the course.           This short introductory text focuses mainly on integration and differentiation of functions of a single variable, although iterated integrals are discussed. Infinitesimals are used when appropriate, and are treated more rigorously than in old books like Thompson's Calculus Made Easy, but in less detail than in Keisler's Elementary Calculus: An Approach Using Infinitesimals. Numerical examples are given using the open-source computer algebra system Yacas, and Yacas is also used sometimes to cut down on the drudgery of symbolic techniques such as partial fractions. Proofs are given for all important results, but are often relegated to the back of the book, and the emphasis is on teaching the techniques of calculus rather than on abstract results. The book is designed more for self-study than for classroom use; full solutions are given for nearly all the end-of-chapter problems.

          In 1965 I first taught an undergraduate course in abstract algebra. It was fun to teach because the material was interesting and the class was outstanding. Five of those students later earned a Ph.D. in mathematics. Since then I have taught the course about a dozen times from various texts. Over the years I developed a set of lecture notes and in 1985 I had them typed so they could be used as a text. They now appear (in modified form) as the first five chapters of this book. Here were some of my motives at the time. 1) To have something as short and inexpensive as possible. In my experience, students like short books. 2) To avoid all innovation. To organize the material in the most simple-minded straightforward manner. 3) To order the material linearly. To the extent possible, each section should use the previous sections and be used in the following sections. 4) To omit as many topics as possible. This is a foundational course, not a topics course. If a topic is not used later, it should not be included. There are three good reasons for this. First, linear algebra has top priority. It is better to go forward and do more linear algebra than to stop and do more group and ring theory. Second, it is more important that students learn to organize and write proofs themselves than to cover more sub ject matter. Algebra is a perfect place to get started because there are many “easy” theorems to prove. There are many routine theorems stated here without proofs, and they may be considered as exercises for the students. Third, the material should be so fundamental that it be appropriate for students in the physical sciences and in computer science. Zillions of students take calculus and cookbook linear algebra, but few take abstract algebra courses. Something is wrong here, and one thing wrong is that the courses try to do too much group and ring theory and not enough matrix theory and linear algebra. 5) To offer an alternative for computer science ma jors to the standard discrete mathematics courses. Most of the material in the first four chapters of this text is covered in various discrete mathematics courses. Computer science ma jors might benefit by seeing this material organized from a purely mathematical viewpoint.

          This book helps students to master the material of a standard US undergraduate linear algebra course. The material is standard in that the topics covered are Gaussian reduction, vector spaces, linear maps, determinants, and eigenvalues and eigenvectors. An- other standard about the book is its audience: sophomores or juniors, usually with a background of at least one semester of Calculus. The help that it gives to students comes from taking a developmental ap- proach — this book’s presentation emphasizes motivation and naturalness, driven home by a wide variety of examples and by extensive and careful exercises. The developmental approach is what sets this book apart, so I will expand on it below. Courses in the beginning of most Mathematics programs focus less on under- standing the theory and more on correctly applying formulas and algorithms. Later courses ask for mathematical maturity: the ability to follow different types of arguments, a familiarity with the themes that underlie many mathematical investigations such as elementary set and function facts, and a capacity for some independent reading and thinking. Linear algebra is an ideal spot to work on the transition. It comes early in a program so that progress made here pays off later, but also comes late enough that students are serious, often ma jors and minors. The material is coherent, accessible, and elegant. There are a variety of argument styles — proofs by contradiction, if and only if statements, and proofs by induction, for instance — and examples are plentiful. So, this book aims to help students develop from being successful at their present level, in classes where a ma jority of students are interested mainly in science or engineering, to being successful at the next level, that of serious students of the sub ject of mathematics itself. Helping students make this transition means taking the mathematics seri- ously, so all of the results in this book are proved. On the other hand, we cannot assume that students have already arrived, and so in contrast with more abstract texts, we give many examples and they are often quite detailed. In the past, linear algebra texts commonly made this transition abruptly. They began with extensive computations of linear systems, matrix multiplica- tions, and determinants. When the concepts — vector spaces and linear maps — finally appeared, and definitions and proofs started, often the change brought students to a stop. In this book, while we start with a computational topic, linear reduction, from the first we do more than compute. We do linear systems quickly but completely, including the proofs needed to justify what we are com- puting. Then, with the linear systems work as motivation and at a point where the study of linear combinations seems natural, the second chapter starts with the definition of a real vector space. This occurs by the end of the third week. Another example of our emphasis on motivation and naturalness is that the third chapter on linear maps does not begin with the definition of homomor- phism, but with that of isomorphism. That’s because this definition is easily motivated by the observation that some spaces are “just like” others. After that, the next section takes the reasonable step of defining homomorphism by isolating the operation-preservation idea. This approach loses mathematical slickness, but it is a good trade because it comes in return for a large gain in sensibility to students. One aim of our developmental approach is that students should feel through- out the presentation that they can see how the ideas arise, and perhaps picture themselves doing the same type of work. The clearest example of the developmental approach taken here — and the feature that most recommends this book — is the exercises. A student progresses most while doing the exercises, so they have been selected with great care. Each problem set ranges from simple checks to reasonably involved proofs. Since an instructor usually assigns about a dozen exercises after each lecture, each section ends with about twice that many, thereby providing a selection. There are even a few problems that are challenging puzzles taken from various journals, competitions, or problems collections. (These are marked with a ‘?’ and as part of the fun, the original wording has been retained as much as possible.) In total, the exercises are aimed to both build an ability at, and help students experience the pleasure of, doing mathematics.

          It is easy to explain in word-terms what trigonometry means, but it is more important to understand what mechanisms of thinking, which will help you understand not only trigonometry, but everything in life in a much more vivid way. In mathematics, trigonometry is an important set of disciplines which relate to two and three dimensional objects; practically anything that you can see around you can be related to the principles of trigonometry and algebra -- in the real-world, it is very useful in engineering and construction, where its principles are important in accurately determining the lengths, sizes and areas of objects without having to actually create them first. Imagine the need to build a structure with only the basic land-area given to you: using the principles of trigonometry, you can easily calculate the geometric properties of objects to an unerring degree of accuracy. Trigonometry, however, isn't just about using formulae to find the correct angle or size in school. It describes the relationships that occur naturally between objects and their similarity in structure. When we compare them using a similar set of ideas, it gives us a lot of power to understand the basis of other things in life beyond that of just their appearance. Even though we can look at a circle, an oval, square or rectangle, we can know that there are principles we can apply to their shape which can be expressed through one entity: the triangle.

  • A Radically Modern Approach to Introductory Physics

          This text has developed out of an alternate beginning physics course at New Mexico Tech designed for those students with a strong interest in physics. The course includes students intending to ma jor in physics, but is not limited to them. The idea for a “radically modern” course arose out of frustration with the standard two-semester treatment. It is basically impossible to in- corporate a significant amount of “modern physics” (meaning post-19th cen- tury!) in that format. Furthermore, the standard course would seem to be specifically designed to discourage any but the most intrepid students from continuing their studies in this area — students don’t go into physics to learn about balls rolling down inclined planes — they are (rightly) interested in quarks and black holes and quantum computing, and at this stage they are largely unable to make the connection between such mundane topics and the exciting things that they have read about in popular books and magazines.

          Physics is the study of the world around us. In a sense we are more qualified to do physics than any other science. From the day we are born we study the things around us in an effort to understand how they work and relate to each other. Learning how to catch or throw a ball is a physics undertaking for example. In the field of study we refer to as physics we just try to make the things everyone has been studying more clear. We attempt to describe them through simple rules and mathematics. Mathematics is merely the language we use. The best approach to physics is to relate everything you learn to things you have already noticed in your everyday life. Sometimes when you look at things closely you discover things you had overlooked initially. It is the continued scrutiny of everything we know about the world around us that leads people to the lifelong study of physics. You can start with asking a simple question like ”Why is the sky blue?” which could lead you to electromagnetic waves which in turn could lead you wave particle duality and to energy levels of atoms and before long you are studying quantum mechanics or the structure of the universe. In the sections that follow notice that we will try to describe how we will communicate the things we are dealing with. This is our langauge. Once this is done we can begin the adventure of looking more closely at the world we live in.

          Why a New Physics Textbook? We Americans assume that our economic system will always scam- per to provide us with the products we want. Special orders don’t upset us! I want my MTV! The truth is more complicated, espe- cially in our education system, which is paid for by the students but controlled by the professoriate. Witness the perverse success of the bloated science textbook. The newspapers continue to com- pare our system unfavorably to Japanese and European education, where depth is emphasized over breadth, but we can’t seem to cre- ate a physics textbook that covers a manageable number of topics for a one-year course and gives honest explanations of everything it touches on. The publishers try to please everybody by including every imag- inable topic in the book, but end up pleasing nobody. There is wide agreement among physics teachers that the traditional one-year in- troductory textbooks cannot in fact be taught in one year. One cannot surgically remove enough material and still gracefully nav- igate the rest of one of these kitchen-sink textbooks. What is far worse is that the books are so crammed with topics that nearly all the explanation is cut out in order to keep the page count below 1100. Vital concepts like energy are introduced abruptly with an equation, like a first-date kiss that comes before “hello.” The movement to reform physics texts is steaming ahead, but despite excellent books such as Hewitt’s Conceptual Physics for non- science ma jors and Knight’s Physics: A Contemporary Perspective for students who know calculus, there has been a gap in physics books for life-science ma jors who haven’t learned calculus or are learning it concurrently with physics. This book is meant to fill that gap.

If you find any mistakes or any parts that are unclear or any topics that you think I should not have omitted, please tell me. I intend this for the undergraduate level, providing a one-semester bridge between some of the introductory math courses and the physics courses in which we expect to use the mathematics. This is the course typically called Mathematical Methods in Physics. The text itself has been expanded so that it now contains far more than a one semester course. The text is available as a single file to download and save, or as the separate chapters. The advantage of the single file is that the internal hyperlinks will take you anywhere in the book, while the internal links in the separate chapters are confined to that chapter. The single file contains a full index (also linked). In the body of the text, the equation references are linked, so that clicking on the reference will take you to that equation. The work presumes a standard of education corresponding to that of a university matriculation examination, and, despite the shortness of the book, a fair amount of patience and force of will on the part of the reader. The author has spared himself no pains in his endeavour to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form, and on the whole, in the sequence and connection in which they actually originated. In the interest of clearness, it appeared to me inevitable that I should repeat myself frequently, without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation. I adhered scrupulously to the precept of that brilliant theoretical physicist L. Boltzmann, according to whom matters of elegance ought to be left to the tailor and to the cobbler. I make no pretence of having withheld from the reader difficulties which are inherent to the subject. On the other hand, I have purposely treated the empirical physical foundations of the theory in a "step-motherly" fashion, so that readers unfamiliar with physics may not feel like the wanderer who was unable to see the forest for the trees.
